1. Granholm Reappoints Mroz to Investment Board
Governor Jennifer Granholm has reappointed President Glenn Mroz to the Strategic Economic Investment and Commercialization Board for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2010.

The board, created in the 21st-century jobs package Granholm approved in November 2005, is responsible for allocating state funds for capital investments, commercial lending and commercialization development. It invests in four competitive-edge technologies: advanced automotive, manufacturing and materials; alternative energy; homeland security and defense; and life sciences.

Board members represent various sectors contributing to Michigan's economic growth, including higher education, private industry, research and agencies focused on economic development.

2. Reminder From the Michigan Tech Fund
Please submit check requests to the Tech Fund (Linda Bilich) no later than Friday, Dec. 14, for processing in 2007. There will be no payables run during the week of Dec. 24.

Diane R. Gilbert, Administrative Aide N7
Department and office location: Facilities Management, 100 Facilities Building

Number of years you have worked at Michigan Tech: 13 years

Highlights of a typical day:

I enjoy the versatility of my job. I'm responsible for making sure that many different office functions run smoothly, from payroll to budgets to handling routine calls for maintenance.

I also supervise clerical and student employees, who do the paperwork and data entry that's required to fill campus work order requests.

In addition, I spend a lot of time working with the trades staff and grounds people. They are a great bunch of guys.

I enjoy working at Michigan Tech because it’s been a dream come true for my husband and me, having moved to Houghton from Southern California 13 years ago. Arriving in Houghton one snowy Saturday morning in March 1994 with two dogs and 11 cats (yeah, 11 cats), one’s thoughts, after renting the only house that was in the paper for rent at that time, turned to where do I want to work.

Well, let me tell you, my husband and I had this conversation many times before he finally talked me into leaving California and heading for Houghton. So upon my first cruise into beautiful downtown Houghton from our hotel in Chassell, I laid my eyes upon the University I had heard so much about and said to myself, “That’s where I am going to work, now where are the thrift stores." In May of 1994, I landed my first job at Tech as a secretary at McNair Hall, which eventually led me to my current position within Facilities Management.

I enjoy working at Michigan Tech because I am honored to be a part of the University and its goal of providing a higher education. I enjoy working at Michigan Tech because of my co-workers, who make it a pleasure to come to work everyday. And, I enjoy working at Michigan Tech because doing so has provided me with the means to live in the beautiful Copper Country.

J. R. VanPelt Library

Major functions of the library are to provide

• access to information resources that support student and faculty course-related work and research;

• information literacy instruction;

• appropriate space for team projects, information-sharing and quiet study.

The library has a staff of 28, including 12 librarians. The library also employs 36 student assistants.

Elizabeth Badke, Library Assistant

Department and office location: Library Circulation

Number of years you have worked at Michigan Tech: 18

Highlights of a typical day: When students stop by to tell me about their day or how they did on an exam, etc.

My favorite memory of working at Michigan Tech is the renovation of the library. We couldn’t wait for it to begin and when it did, we couldn’t wait for it to be completed. Moving into our new areas was very exciting, and to see the looks on students’ faces as they returned the following semester was great. Something I’ll never forget.

Pattie Luokkanen, Binding/Serials Manager

Department and office location: Technical Services-Library second floor

Number of years working at Michigan Tech: 17

I enjoy working at Michigan Tech because I enjoy being part of a university. There is a feeling of so much potential here. It makes me feel more connected to the world because of the diverse group of people that work here and are educated here.

I especially enjoy working with our student assistants. It is great getting to know them and sharing in their lives as they prepare for their futures. Most of the students that have worked in our department start here in their freshman year and keep working with us until they graduate.

Friday's staff profiles: Carrie Richards (SFRES), Mary Ann Struthers (Student Activities) and Crystal Verran (Marketing and Communications)

submitted by Educational Opportunity

In keeping with the spirit of the giving season, the offices of Institutional Diversity and Educational Opportunity will sponsor Giving Baskets. You are invited to donate hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, blankets, nonperishable food items and pet supplies. Any donations are welcome and would be greatly appreciated.

Giving Baskets are located on the first floor of the Alumni House in Carol Argentati's office, room 101.

Donations will be delivered to the women's shelter, Salvation Army, and the Animal Alliance on Dec. 21 for distribution in our community. By hosting these Giving Baskets, we hope to share the warm and caring beliefs that are part of all cultures throughout the world and a way of giving thanks for all that we have and our desire to help others less fortunate.
