2. Army ROTC Finishes First in Ranger Challenge Midwest Regional |
The Michigan Tech Army ROTC Ranger Challenge team finished first in the Midwest Regional held Oct. 13-14 at Fort McCoy, Wis.
This finish represents the highest for the Arctic Warrior Battalion in five years and only the second time the team has finished first in the last decade.
The Ranger Challenge is a grueling military skills and endurance competition informally known as the varsity sport for Army ROTC cadets. The 17-man team, led by Cadets Steven Shiel (Mathematical Sciences) and Mike Panek (Cognitive and Learning Sciences), competed in constructing a one-rope bridge 250 over feet of water, orienteering through 30 kilometers of rough terrain, treating simulated casualties, pulling a Humvee over a short distance, a physical fitness test and other events.
The competition culminated Sunday, Oct. 14, in a 10-kilometer road march/run, where the team finished in just over one hour while carrying 40-pound packs and weapons. |

3. Author, Producer Jennifer Jordan at the Rozsa Oct. 30 |
Author and producer Jennifer Jordan will give a lecture, "The Passion, Politics and Perils of High Altitude Climbing: The Women of K2 and the Mountain that Killed Them," and screen her documentary film, "Women of K2," Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rozsa Center. The event is free and is appropriate for those high school age and up.
In her book "Savage Summit," Jordan tells the tragic stories of the women who tried, succeeded and ultimately perished climbing the world’s second-highest mountain. Each examines still prevalent climbing controversies around women in the very male world of high-altitude climbing, while exploring the so-called “Savage Summit” through the hearts, minds and experiences of its female pioneers.
Out of respect for performers and other audience members, there is no late seating at Rozsa Center events. Doors will be closed and each performance will begin at its scheduled time. The doors to the performance hall open one-half hour before each event.
Jordan’s visit is made possible by a generous sponsorship from the Van Evera Lecture Series Endowment. For more information, please call the Rozsa Center at 487-2844. |

6. Michigan Tech Notables |
Lauren M. Fry, a PhD student in environmental engineering, was awarded a highly competitive, three-year graduate fellowship from the US Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development. The EPA GRO Graduate Fellowship provides a stipend, tution and fees, and funds for research supplies.
Fry's research is in the area of water resources and sustainable sanitation in developing countries. Her graduate advisors are Professor James Mihelcic and Associate Professor David Watkins (Civil and Environmental Engineering).
As an environmental engineering student in Michigan Tech's Master's International Program, Fry spent two years in Cameroon as a Peace Corps volunteer, implementing spring improvement and latrine construction projects with the Ministry of Agriculture. Much of this work was focused on community organization and project design and management training in the villages where she worked. Her research in Cameroon focused on connecting engineering improvements to water supply with improvement in health.
Prior to beginning her PhD studies, Fry worked in the US EPA Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances as a pollution prevention/environmental justice fellow. Her BA degree is in Physics with a geology minor from Gustavus Adolphus College. |
