MEGAN C. FROST

Megan C. Frost joins the Department of Biomedical Engineering as an assistant professor. She comes to Michigan Tech from the University of Michigan.

Frost holds a PhD in Chemistry with a Cellular Biotechnology Certificate from the University of Michigan. She also holds an MS in Analytical Chemistry and a BS in Chemistry from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and a BS in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame.

She has taught Quantitative Analysis and General Chemistry at the University of Michigan. She has also coordinated a departmental seminar series, Chemical Sciences at the Interface of Education.

Frost’s research work includes development of nitric oxide releasing biomedical devices with improved biocompatibility, improving the biocompatibility of hydrophobic polymers via nitric oxide release and improving the performance of planar chromatography,

Frost has been published in numerous works including Analytical Chemistry, the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, Biomaterials, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the Journal of Chromatography and the Journal of Planar Chromatography.

Frost is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Society for Biomaterials and the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.

2. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
JACOB E. HILLER

Jacob E. Hiller joins the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from the University of Illinois.

Hiller holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also holds an MS and a BS in Civil Engineering from Michigan State University.

He has taught Geometric Design of Roads at the University of Illinois, has been a teaching assistant in Introduction to Soil Mechanics at Michigan State University and a graduate assistant in Structural Mechanics I at the University of Notre Dame.

Hiller has been published in numerous journals including the International Journal of Concrete Pavements, the Journal of Transportation Engineering, the Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, the Transportation Research Record and the ACI Materials Journal.

Hiller’s research interests include cohesive zone modeling of top-down crack propagation in rigid pavement, use of X-ray tomography to characterize microcracking in PCC pavements, utilization of recycled materials in PCC pavements, curling stress relaxation of rigid pavement slabs, use of precast PCC pavements in urban settings and field evaluation of built-in curling levels in rigid pavements.

Hiller is a member of the American Concrete Institute, the Chi Epsilon National Civil Engineering Honor Society and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is also a reviewer for several engineering journals.

3. Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences
ALEKSEY V. SMIRNOV

Aleksey V. Smirnov joins the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences as an assistant professor. Smirnov comes to Michigan Tech from Yale University.

Smirnov holds a PhD and an MS in Geophysics from the University of Rochester.

Smirnov has developed a physical foundations of paleomagnetism course at Yale University. He has also taught Geographic Information Systems: Earth Science Applications, Introduction to Physical Geology, Hotspots and Plate Motions, and Seminar in Paleomagnetism at the University of Rochester, and several courses at Saint Petersburg State University.

Smirnov has been published in numerous journals including the Journal of Geophysical Research, Reviews of Geophysics and Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Smirnov’s research interests include the long-term evaluation of Earth’s magnetic field and its geophysical and geological implications, application of paleomagnetism to geodynamics and global tectonics and basic and applied rock and mineral magnetism.

GREGORY P. WAITE

Gregory P. Waite joins the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from the United States Geological Survey.

Waite holds a PhD and an MS in Geophysics from the University of Utah. He also holds a BA in Mathematics from St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.

His work has been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research and the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research.

His research interests include using seismology to investigate active processes, imaging the magmatic systems of Mount St. Helens using seismic tomography and volcanic earthquake source process modeling, teleseismic tomography and anisotropy of the Yellowstone hotspot and the role of fluids in initiating earthquakes.

Waite is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America, the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior, the Seismological Society of America and the Society of Exploration Geophysics.

4. Department of Materials Science and Engineering
YUN HANG HU

Yun Hang Hu joins the Department of Materials Science and Engineering as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Hu holds a PhD in Chemistry from Xiamen University. He also holds an MS in Catalysis from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a BS in Chemistry from Nanchang University (formerly Jiangxi University.)

Hu has been published in numerous journals including the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the Journal of Catalysis, the Journal of Chemical Physics, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research and Chemical Physics Letters.

His past research experience includes nanomaterials, hydrogen storage materials, computational nanosciences, catalyst materials for on-board gasoline reforming to hydrogen for fuel-cell vehicles and advanced materials for on-board sulfur removal for fuel-cell vehicles.

He has taught Advanced Energy at State University of New York at Buffalo, and Thermodynamics, Reaction Kinetics and Modern Spectroscopy at Xiamen University.

Hu was named an Outstanding Researcher by the Immigration and Naturalization Services of the United States in 1997, Excellent Young Faculty by Xiamen University in 1994, and was presented with the Excellent Young Chemist Award in 1992 by the Chinese Chemical Society. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Chemical Society.

GAJENDRA S. SHEKHAWAT

Gajendra S. Shekhawat joins the Department of Materials Science and Engineering as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from Northwestern University.

Shekhawat holds a PhD in Materials Science and Physics and an ME in Microelectronics from the Birla Institute for Technology and Science, Pilani and University of Rajasthan, India. He also holds an MS in Applied Physics.

He has taught Advanced Microscopy, Nanomechanical Systems and Patterning, Synthesis of Nanostructures and Characterization and Scanning Probe Microscopy at Northwestern University. He has also taught Microelectronics, Physics of Semiconductor Devices, Electronic Material and Devices and BioMEMS and Micro-Fluidics at the Birla Institute of Science and Technology.

His work has been published in numerous journals and publications including Science, the Journal of Applied Physics, Applied Physics Letters, the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry and the Indian Journal of Micromechanical Systems.

Shekhawat’s research interests include microsystems and nanosystems, genetically engineered molecular interconnects, genetically engineered molecular sensors, biomolecular nanomechanical systems, high-resolution sub-surface nanometrology development and nano-bio-mechanics, active nanostructure and systems, semiconductor devices and microsensors and nanomaterials.

5. Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics
OSSAMA O. ABDELKHALIK

Ossama O. Abdelkhalik joins the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Abdelkhalik holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University. He also holds an MS and a BS in Aerospace Engineering from Cairo University.

He has taught Control Systems Analysis and Design and Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics and Controls at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He has also assisted in teaching Space Technology and Fundamentals of Engineering, Statics and Dynamics at Texas A&M University. He is a two-time recipient of Texas A&M University’s Academic Excellence Award.

Abdelkhalik’s research interests include the use of star tracker sensors for autonomous navigation of spacecraft formations, global optimization techniques to search for solutions to problems in Earth satellite systems and in space mission design, the aerospace vehicle design process and an optimal solution to the orbit transfer problem using continuous thrust.

He has been published in the Journal of Guidance Dynamics and Control, the Journal of Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy, the Journal of Space Mission Architecture and the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets.

Abdelkhalik is a member of the American Astronautical Society, the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

BO CHEN

Bo Chen joins the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics as an assistant professor. She comes to Michigan Tech from the University of California at Davis.

Chen holds a PhD in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering from UC-Davis. She also holds an MS in Engineering and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Zheijang Sci-Tech University in China.

Her areas of specialization include mobile agent and multi-agent systems, distributed autonomous and intelligent systems, mechatronic and embedded systems, computer-aided design and analysis and Web-based systems. Her research interests include intelligent and cooperative distributed mechatronic and embedded systems, dynamic reconfigurable cyber-mechanical systems and distributed smart sensors and sensor networks.

Her work has been published in Computers and Graphics, IEEE Control Systems Magazine, the ASME Journal of Computing and Information Science Engineering, the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design and Intellimotion.

Chen is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers. She is also a reviewer for several journals.

DENNIS DESHENG MENG

Dennis Desheng Meng joins the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics as an assistant professor. Meng comes to Michigan Tech from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Meng holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from UCLA. He also holds an MS and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

His research interests include microfluidics using surface tension force, advanced energy systems for portable applications, MEMS design, fabrication, characterization and implementation and BioMEMS and nanotechnology.

Meng has been published in numerous works including the Journal of Micromechanics and Engineering and the Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems.

Meng is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He is also a reviewer for several journals.

FERNANDO PONTA

Fernando Ponta joins the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics as an assistant professor. Ponta comes to Michigan Tech from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Ponta holds a PhD in Engineering and a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Buenos Aires.

His research interests include theoretical and computational fluid dynamics, vortex dynamics, fluid-structure interaction, wind-turbine aerodynamics, renewable energy sources and energy systems.

His work has been published in publications including the Journal of Computational Physics, Physics of Fluids, Physical Review Letters and Renewable Energy.

Ponta has been a member of the Directive Council of the College of Engineering at the University of Buenos Aires since 2000. He has also served as a member of the Academic Committee in Basic Sciences of the College of Engineering and a member of the Academic Committee in Mechanical Engineering. He is also a reviewer for Physics of Fluids and the International Journal of Global Energy Issues.

REZA YASSAR

Reza Yassar joins the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from Mississippi State University.

Yassar holds a PhD in Materials Science from Washington State University. He also holds an MS in Metal Forming and a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran.

His past research experience includes the application of machine learning algorithms in materials design, structure-property relationships during sequential manufacturing processes, atomistic simulation of plasticity in aluminum-magnesium alloys under the effect of crystallographic orientation, mathematical modeling of precipitate-dislocation interactions, experimental characteristics of precipitate-dislocation interactions, structure-property characterizations of thin films and the effect of shock-loading on precipitate evolution.

Yassar is co-authoring a textbook, “Theory of Internal State Variable Inelasticity.” He has been published in journals including the International Journal of Plasticity, Modeling and Simulation in Materials Science and Engineering and the Journal of Materials Science.

Yassar was included in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in 2007. He was also awarded his department’s Researcher Excellence Award by Washington State University in 2005.

6. Department of Chemistry
LANRONG BI

Lanrong Bi joins the Department of Chemistry as an assistant professor. She comes to Michigan Tech from Columbia University.

Bi holds a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from Beijing University. She also holds an MS in Organic Chemistry and a BS in Chemistry from HeBei Normal University.

Bi’s work has been published in works including the Journal of the American Chemistry Society, the Journal of Organic Chemistry, Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry, Tetrahedron Letters, Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Research in Toxicology and the Journal of Chromatography. She also has several patents involving preparation of 1,3-dioxane derivatives having protein kinase C inhibitory activity and their therapeutic use.

In 2001 Bi was awarded an MNR Research Fellowship from the French National Science Research Center. She has also won the National Science and Technology Development Prize from the Ministry of Education in China.

Bi is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.

MARTA WLOCH

Marta Wloch joins the Department of Chemistry as an assistant professor. She comes to Michigan Tech from Michigan State University.

Wloch holds a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Silesia. She has also done postgraduate studies in software engineering at Jagiellonian University, and holds an MS in Physics and Chemistry from the University of Silesia.

Wloch’s research interests include quantum theory of molecular electronic structure and nuclear structure, new ab initio methods, coupled-cluster theory, diagrammatic and algebraic methods for many-body systems, development of new algorithms and computer codes for quantum chemistry and nuclear structure, accurate calculations of molecular potential energy surfaces for ground and excited states, one-electron properties including one-electron density matrices, multiple moments and transition multiple moments and computational exploration of chemical reaction mechanisms and reaction pathways.

Wloch has been published in the Annals of Polymer Chemistry, Nuclei and Mesoscopic Physics, the Journal of Chemical Physics, Condensed Matter Theories, Progress in Theoretical Chemistry and Physics and the Journal of Quantum Chemistry.

7. Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences
J. CHRISTOPHER BRILL

J. Christopher Brill joins the Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from the University of Central Florida.

Brill completed his PhD in Applied Experimental and Human Factors
Psychology at the University of Central Florida. He also holds an MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of West Florida, a BA in Psychology from Northern Kentucky University and an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts from the University of Cincinnati.

His past research experience includes the development of tactile display systems for dismounted soldiers, human ability to localize vibrotactile stimuli on the abdomen, the psychophysiological aftereffects of ship-deployed flight simulators and age-related biases in making causal attributions for mishaps.

Brill has taught Physiological Psychology, Sensation and Perception, Principles of Human Factors Psychology, Neuropsychology and Cognitive Psychology at the University of Central Florida. He has been published in numerous works including Perception and Psychophysics and Human Performance, Situation Awareness and Automation: Current Research and Trends.

Brill is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and is a reviewer for several of their technical groups. He is also an associate member of Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, a member of the Southeastern Psychological Association and a member of the Tactile Research Group.

8. Department of Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education
ERICH NORSE OTTEM

Erich Norse Ottem joins the Department of Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from Michigan State University.

Ottem holds a PhD in Neuroscience and Behavior from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He also holds a BS in Biology from Tennessee Technological University.

His work has been published in Nature Neuroscience, the Journal of Neuroscience, Biology of Reproduction and Endocrinology.

His past research experience includes the influence of androgens on the physiology of the motorneurons of the spinal nucleus of the bulbocavernonsus, regulation of glutamatergic and GABAergic signaling by estrogen to promote gonadotropin hormone-releasing hormone surge release prior to ovulation in female rats and determination of the growth rate of several destructive fungal species on various common insulatory materials used in home construction. He has taught Human Physiology at Lansing Community College and Brain and Behavior at Michigan State University.

Ottem is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the Endocrine Society, the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology and the Society for Technical Communication.

9. Department of Mathematical Sciences
FABRIZIO ZANELLO

Fabrizio Zanello joins the Department of Mathematical Sciences as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from the University of Notre Dame.

Zanello holds a PhD in Mathematics from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont. He also holds an MS in Mathematics from the University of Genoa in Genoa, Italy.

He was a national finalist in the Italian Mathematics Olympics in 1995 through 1997, and ranked first for Liguria in 1996.

His work has appeared in journals including Periodico de Matematiche, the Journal of Algebra, American Mathematics Monthly and the Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra.

10. Department of Visual and Performing Arts
PATRICIA HELSEL

Patricia Helsel joins the Department of Visual and Performing Arts as an assistant professor. She was previously an adjunct instructor at Michigan Tech.

Before coming to Tech, Helsel was an instructor at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., where she taught Voice and Diction, Oral Interpretation and Fundamentals of Speech. She has also directed and taught at the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts.

Helsel holds an MFA in Acting and Directing from Minnesota State University-Mankato. She also holds BAs in Theatre and Music from Elmira College in Elmira, NY.

Her acting credits include the role of M’Lynn in “Steel Magnolias,” Edna in “Guys and Dolls,” Kate in “Kiss Me Kate” and Mercedes in “Carmen.” Her directing credits include “You Can’t Take It With You,” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Rumpelstiltskin,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “The Music Man.”

11. School of Business and Economics
WILLIAM SCOTT BREFFLE

William Scott Breffle joins the School of Business and Economics as an associate professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from Stratus Consulting Inc. of Boulder, Colo.

Breffle holds a PhD, MA and BA in Economics from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Breffle has been published in numerous journals and publications including Marine Resource Economics, Urban Studies, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the Journal of Environmental Management and the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management.

His past research experience includes benefit-cost analyses for evaluations of proposed water projects in California, the economic benefits of right whale protection, natural resource damage assessment recreation and equivalency studies, angler surveys, impact analysis of water quality regulations and climate change and human health.

Breffle is a member of the American Economics Association, the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Epsilon. He is also a reviewer for several journals.

DAVID OROZCO

David Orozco joins the School of Business and Economics as an assistant professor. Orozco comes to Michigan Tech from Northwestern University.

Orozco holds a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Ill. He also holds a BS in Economics from the Stern School of Business at New York University.

He has been a research fellow and research assistant at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He has co-instructed Innovation and Invention at the McCormick School of Engineering.

Orozco’s research interests include law and economics, case studies on intellectual property and strategy and strategic contracts.

Orozco is a member of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, the Licensing Executives Society, the Academy of Management and the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

He has been published in numerous works including Les Nouvelles and several Kellogg School of Management Technical Notes.

LATHA POONAMALLEE

Latha Poonamallee joins the School of Business and Economics as an assistant professor. She comes to Michigan Tech from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Poonamallee holds a PhD in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University. She also holds an MBA from Pondicherry Central University in India and a BA in English Literature from the University of Madras in India.

Her research interests include social and organizational transformation, work-life integration/balance, globalization and sustainable livelihood generation, socio-ecological issues and international management and qualitative research methods.

Poonamallee has taught courses in Leadership Assessment and Development, Human Values in Organization, Introduction to Organizational Behavior and Developing Interpersonal Skills for Managers.

She has been published in works such as the Journal of Action Research, Ephemera and several textbooks and case books.

MARIA GABRIELA SCHUTTE

Maria Gabriela Schutte joins the School of Business and Economics as an assistant professor. She comes to Michigan Tech from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Schutte holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She also holds an MS in Finance from the University of Notre Dame and a BS in Economics from the Catholic University of Ecuador in Quito.

Her research interests include capital markets, empirical asset pricing and international finance.

Schutte has taught Management of Financial Institutions, Financial Management Policy and Corporate Finance labs at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has also taught Principles of Microeconomics at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

MANISH K. SRIVASTAVA

Manish K. Srivastava joins the School of Business and Economics as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from Virginia Tech.

Srivastava holds a PhD in Strategic Management from Virginia Tech. He also holds an MBA from Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology at Allahabad University in India and a BA in Civil Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, Burdwan University in India.

His research interests include technological innovation, inter-organizational networks and geographic clusters. His teaching interests include business policy and strategy, international management, technology and innovation management and organization theory. He has taught Business Policy and Strategy and International Management at Virginia Tech.

Srivastava is a member of the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society and the All India Management Association.

YULIYA STRIZHAKOVA

Yuliya Strizhakova joins the School of Business and Economics as an assistant professor. She comes to Michigan Tech from Suffolk University.

Strizhakova holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from the University of Connecticut. She also holds an MA in Communication with a concentration in marketing communication from the University of Hartford and a BA and MA in English/German and Linguistics from Kharkov State University in Kharkov, Ukraine.

She has taught Advertising, Advertising Copy, Research Methods, Seminar in Advertising and Marketing Communications at Suffolk University. She has also taught Persuasion, Mass Media Effects, and Public Speaking at the University of Connecticut and Introduction to Communication and Improving Communication Skills at the University of Hartford.

Her past research experience includes the effects of alcohol advertising on youth drinking, the intercultural meanings of brands, the branding of media conglomerates and the application of new technology in teaching. Her current research includes the functional and symbolic meanings of brands in Romania, Ukraine and the US; global openness and consumer ethnocentrism as predictors of brand meanings in the developed and developing markets; cognitive and emotional predictors of leisure consumption; suggesting advertising imagery and the effects of prejudice on advertising processing and alcohol advertising and normative beliefs as predictors of youth drinking.

JOEL C. TUORINIEMI

Joel C. Tuoriniemi joins the School of Business and Economics as an assistant professor.

Tuoriniemi holds a juris doctor from Michigan State University-Detroit College of Law. He also holds a BSBA from Michigan Tech.

He has taught Accounting Principles I and II, Business Law, Legal Environment of Business, Intellectual Property Law, Foundations of Taxation, Advanced Tax Topics, CenTILE Project, Perspectives and Institutions at Michigan Tech.

Tuoriniemi’s research interests include reasonableness determinations in contract interpretation, equitable relief in employment disputes, student ethical perceptions and ethical considerations in intellectual property protection. He has been published in works including Michigan Tax Lawyer and the Michigan Bar Journal.

Tuoriniemi won the 2006 Michigan Technological University School of Business and Economics Teaching Award and was a 2006 Michigan Tech Innovative Teaching Award nominee. He was also a 2003 recipient of the Michigan Tech Distinguished Teaching Award and was inducted into the University's Academy of Teaching Excellence.

Tuoriniemi is a member of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, the American Accounting Association and the Michigan Bar Association.

12. School of Technology
ALAA ELDIN ALY

Alaa Eldin Aly joins the School of Technology as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from the University of Louisville.

Aly holds a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Louisville. He also holds an MS in Control and Computer Engineering and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Assiut University in Egypt.

He has taught courses in digital design and analysis, electric circuit analysis, electrical measurements and devices, computer interfacing, numerical analysis and programming, operating systems design, computer architecture and programming languages. His past research and work experience includes development of a novel approach for robust feature extraction in color images, human identification using 2D and 3D features extracted from the human face, redesigning robotic sensors and developing their interfacing software, developing a robotic path planning approach, algorithms for obstacle avoidance, tracking and autonomous navigation, developing novel approaches for feature extraction in 3D images and multispectral image non-rigid registration for automatic change detection.

Aly is a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Egyptian Syndicate of Engineers.

EUGENE LEVIN

Eugene Levin joins the School of Technology as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from American Guidance, Navigation and Control Corporation of Simi Valley, Calif.

Levin holds a PhD in Photogrammetry from Land Organization University in Moscow. He also holds an MS in Geodesy from the Academy of Engineers in Geodesy, Aerospace, Survey and Mapping in Novosibirsk.

Levin has worked as a project manager at American GNC designing and developing products in the fields of UAV-based target surveillance and tracking, image processing, automation in photogrammetry and remote sensing and many other fields. He has also worked as a lead photogrammetrist at Digital Map Products of Costa Mesa, Calif., a senior scientist/team leader in geospatial technology at Physical Optics Corporation of Torrance, Calif. and worked to develop a military photogrammetric intelligence system with Ness Technologies of Tel Aviv, Israel. He has taught courses in GIS Image Processing and Basics of Remote Sensing at Omsk Agricultural Academy in Omsk, Russia, and instructed a training course and summer field practice in Image Interpretation for Topographic Mapping.

His research interests include methods of high-resolution remote sensing, automated feature extraction from aerial and satellite imagery, data fusion in remote sensing and GIS, GIS-oriented image analysis, spatio-temporal datamining, knowledge extraction, autonomous GPS-independent navigation, photogrammetry of aerial and high-resolution satellite imagery, digital image processing and GIS in applied geosciences and remote sensing and environmental engineering.

His work has been published in the proceedings of numerous conferences including the ASPRS Annual Conference and the SPIE.

ALEX SERGEYEV

Alex Sergeyev joins the School of Technology as an assistant professor.

Sergeyev holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Physics from Michigan Tech. He also holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Moscow University of Electronics and Automation.

Sergeyev taught Electrical Power and Controls last year at Michigan Tech and was a substitute instructor for Fourier Optics and Photonics.

His past research experience includes lasers and laser spectroscopy, modeling high energy laser behavior in a turbulent atmosphere and experimental studies of the physical properties of aerosols in the atmosphere.

He has been published in Optical Engineering, Measurement Science and Technology and Applied Optics.

13. Department of Humanities
JINGFANG REN

Jingfang Ren joins the Department of Humanities as an instructor. She comes to Michigan Tech from Purdue University.

Ren holds a PhD in English from Purdue. She also holds an MA in English from Eastern Washington University and a BA in English from Beijing Second Foreign Language Institute.

She has been published in works including the Journal of Business and Technical Communication.

Ren has taught courses in introductory research methods for professional writers, introductory business writing, technical communication, practicum for tutoring professional writing, introductory composition, academic research, exposition and argumentation, analysis, research and documentation and written communication for international grad students. She also served as the Assistant Director of Professional and Technical Writing at Purdue.

Ren is a member of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the Association for Teachers in Technical Writing, the Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication, the Modern Language Association, the International Writing Centers Association, the National Council of Teachers of English and the Indiana Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.
