1. Nearly 300 Employers Coming to Career Day |
Representatives from nearly 300 companies and agencies will be at Michigan Tech Tuesday, Oct. 2, for the University's annual Career Day.
A total of 283 employers will be visiting with students from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gates Tennis Center. That's an increase of nearly 50 over last year's banner attendance. In addition to recruiting graduates, companies are looking for students to fill internships and co-op positions.
"Demand for our graduates has always been high, but it's skyrocketing this year," said Career Center Director Jim Turnquist. "Companies from all over the country tell us that the baby boomers are retiring, and they are facing big gaps in management and technical areas."
As in the past, employers are especially interested in graduates with skills in engineering and technology.
Several automakers will be recruiting at Career Day, along with oil, mining and electronics companies. The heavy construction industry, which focuses on infrastructure and large buildings, is also looking for new workers.
Software developers are well represented. "We have one company coming up from Ann Arbor; they've told us our graduates are great, and they want to hire more," Turnquist said.
Companies also recognize the importance of developing relationships with students early. "Employers are holding about 70 informal informational meetings over the next two days," Turnquist said. "They serve pizza and snacks, and it gives them a chance to network with students."
