1. Students Receive DeVlieg Fellowships
Three Michigan Tech graduate students have received the university's 2007-08 DeVlieg Fellowships.

In the MS category, Karen Hauch (Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics) will receive $1,500. In the PhD category, Patricia Nadeau (Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences) and Jason Moscatello (Physics) will each receive $3,000. The fellowship winners were selected from among the nominees by a committee convened by the Graduate School, including representatives from each Michigan Tech school and college.

The Michigan Tech DeVlieg Fellowships are funded through a generous donation provided to the Graduate School by the DeVlieg Foundation. Funding is intended to contribute to the education and attainment of research goals by graduate students.

2. Phi Delta Chi Selling Benefit Cookout Tickets at K-Day
Phi Delta Chi will be selling tickets at their K-Day booth this Friday, Sept. 7, to a benefit cookout for victims of a fire that damaged the Alpha Xi Zeta house on Houghton Avenue and a student residence next door.

The two houses caught fire during a thunderstorm on the morning of July 7. The students in the houses at the time of the fire are safe and were apparently unharmed, though the homes were seriously damaged. The cookout is sponsored by the City of Houghton and will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, 3-8 p.m. at the East Houghton Park, near the Super 8 Motel.

Tickets are $5 and will also be available at the cookout.

3. Flags Flown at Half Staff Tomorrow
Flags will be lowered tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 7, in honor of Army Sergeant First Class Daniel E. Scheibner, of Muskegon, who died Aug. 30 while on active duty in Iraq.

Sgt. Scheibner, 40, died in Al Noor from wounds sustained when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Striker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.

4. Student Affairs Hosting Webinar on Student Success and Retention Sept. 12

This webinar will provide concrete data and research on quality academic advising. Presenters Susan Campbell, president of NACADA, and Charlie Nutt, interim executive director of NACADA, are recognized internationally for their work in this field. This is a must for all advisors and administrators interested in increasing the success of their students.

5. SmartZone Seminar Today
Registration is still open for the MTEC SmartZone seminar, “An Introduction to Mergers and Acquisitions,” which will be held today, Sept. 6, 1-3 p.m. at the Advanced Technology Development Complex, 1402 E. Sharon Ave.

Last minute reservations can be handled at the door; however, handouts are limited so an RSVP will ensure that registrants will have a copy of the materials. There is a registration fee of $15 to cover the cost of these materials, but it is waived for students.

This seminar is intended for small- and medium-size businesses that want to learn fundamental strategies and methods for mergers and acquisitions, both as an acquirer and as an acquisition target. It is funded by the Michigan Technology Tri-Corridor.

6. New Funding
Christopher Webster (SFRES) has received $27,142 for the first year of a potential $54,284 project, "Determine the Impacts of Aluminum Toxicity and Calcium Loss on Threatened High Elevation Spruce-Fir," from the US Department of the Interior, National Park Service.

Professor Elizabeth Flynn (Humanities) recently published "Louise Rosenblatt and the Ethical Turn in Literary Theory" in College English, Volume 70, No. 1, September 2007.

9. Michigan Tech Notables
Les Cook, vice president for student affairs, has been appointed to the advisory board for Student Affairs Today. Each monthly issue of Student Affairs Today provides practical tips for handling real-life, day-to-day issues, such as campus compliance, student conduct policies and procedures, sexual harassment, binge drinking, office management, student development programs and overall crisis management. In addition, it includes the latest news and significant developments in higher education.

10. New Staff
Scott Shannon has joined the University Marketing and Communications staff as a web developer/designer. He was previously employed by Administrative Information Services as a student developer. Shannon holds a BS in Computer Science from Michigan Tech and lives in Houghton.

Theresa Shebby has joined the staff of Institutional Analysis as a planning analyst. She was previously employed by Portage Health System as a nursing home pharmacy coordinator. Shebby holds a degree in biomedical engineering from Michigan Tech. She is married to Jeremy and lives in Calumet.

Loralee Sutinen has joined the Dining Services staff as a food service helper. She was previously employed as a bartender at Cliff View Inn. Sutinen holds a BA in French and International Studies from Northern Michigan University. She lives in Calumet and loves music and the outdoors.

Mariusz Nowak has joined the staff of System Administration Services as a system administrator 1. He holds a CCNA from Cisco Inc. He is married to Marta Wloch, lives in Houghton and is interested in photography and travel.

12. Free Desk in Internal Audit
Internal Audit is giving away a three-drawer, brown, metal-frame desk with a wood-look laminate top. It measures 60 inches long by 30 inches wide. It also includes a detachable, three-drawer credenza (right side), measuring 38 inches long by 20 inches wide.

The desk is located in Suite 101 of the UPPCO building.
