1. New Zip File Virus Clogging Email |
A new email virus is affecting Michigan Tech's email system, Distributed Computing Services has announced.
You have probably received many malicious spam emails inviting you to protect your computer from certain death by opening an attached zip file. Wisely, you probably deleted that message along with a hundred others.
Unfortunately, some individuals fell for the ruse. The virus in that zip attachment is dubbed “Storm Trojan” by Symantec, which warns that it may cause a whopping 50-to-60-fold increase in the amount of spam on the Internet. Just today, DCS is tracking a 27 percent increase in the volume of email received over yesterday.
IT professionals fear that this massive overload may cause very serious problems with Internet connectivity, including email delivery.
DCS staff believe they can minimize the effect on on-campus email delivery. However, mail coming from or going to sites off campus may suffer long delays.
In any case, expect a sharp increase in the number of spam email messages you receive. And it is possible that a flood of incoming emails will overwhelm Michigan Tech's email virus scanning and delivery system, which could shut down delivery of all incoming email for some period of time. You may also experience problems with your home computers.
"We recognize the very serious nature of these systems and are working to minimize the effect to the university and its users," said Dan deBeaubien, director, Distributed Computing Services.
In particular, if you receive any email containing a zip file, be extremely cautious about opening it. Even if you think it is harmless, verify with the original sender that it is legitimate before opening it. The email may appear to come from someone that you know. |

3. Michigan Tech Students Create the Future at Undergrad Expo |
By Kim Geiger, outreach coordinator, College of Engineering
What do a CPR mattress, small aircraft flight controls redesigned for paraplegic pilots, effects of chocolate and music on test anxiety, a portable human-powered laptop charger, micro-satellite markers and gender differences in hockey players have in common? They’re all part of Michigan Tech’s upcoming Undergraduate Expo.
Guests from campus, community and industry are invited to view the work of Michigan Tech’s exceptional students at the Undergrad Expo. It all takes place on Thursday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Presentations, projects and posters will be available for viewing throughout the day, and refreshments will be served. The event is free of charge.
The Expo provides an opportunity for students to showcase their research, design and independent study projects. Participants of the university’s undergraduate sesearch, Senior Design and Enterprise programs compete for cash prizes.
A panel of judges made up of faculty members and corporate representatives critique the projects. More than 40 student presentations will be made, and more than 80 student posters will be on display this year, encompassing a variety of disciplines across campus.
Many of the projects are sponsored by industry. Through sponsorship, industry is able to link up with fresh, new talent and contribute significantly to student education and the mission of the university. Students gain professional experience and a chance to build their resumes through direct exposure to real-world problems and competition.
The Expo is a combined effort of Educational Opportunity and the College of Engineering, but participants represent many departments across campus. For more information, contact Elizabeth Van Dam at evandam@mtu.edu or 487-2904. |
