3. "Gay? Fine By Me." T-Shirt Funding Needed |
Keweenaw Pride is seeking donations to fund its participation in the "gay? fine by me" initiative. The money will be used to hand out 500 "gay? fine by me" t-shirts, which will require approximately $2,400 to $2,500. Donations are welcome from departments, student groups, alumni, corporations, local businesses or even individuals.
Keweenaw Pride plans to hand out the shirts by the middle of next semester. The t-shirts will be handed out in the residence halls and in Fisher. The shirts will be in Michigan Tech colors, either black or gold, and will be free to anyone willing to wear them throughout the year to show support.
Departments, organizations or student groups who are interested in donating towards this project should contact Keweenaw Pride at pride@mtu.edu , or Keweenaw Pride treasurer Melissa Jones at mjjones@mtu.edu . Individuals, alumni or companies looking to donate can contact Keweenaw Pride directly, or tax-free donations may be made through the Michigan Tech Fund at http://www.mtf.mtu.edu or by calling 487-2310. People or organizations contacting the Michigan Tech Fund should direct donations to Keweenaw Pride (fund 3057).
For more information about Keweenaw Pride, visit http://www.kpride.org or contact pride@mtu.edu . If you wish to learn more about the "gay? fine by me." campaign, visit http://www.finebyme.org .
In 2006, Keweenaw Pride, Michigan Tech's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally organization, organized the first free distribution of 500 shirts to the students, staff and faculty of our campus. These shirts had the message, "gay? fine by me" written on them as part of a national initiative started in 2003 at Duke University. It's a simple yet effective program that is meant to be a very visible show of support for our GLBT students, staff and faculty.
At Michigan Tech, this was done at the end of Pride Week last year. This occurred the day after the chalking incident, in which a number of yet undiscovered perpetrators wrote homophobic and threatening graffiti around campus. As a very encouraging contrast to this example of homophobia, every single one of the t-shirts was given away within two days of the chalking event. A large number of people were left asking if Keweenaw Pride would be handing out any more and, if so, when. A picture of those wearing the t-shirts can be seen at http://www.mtu.edu/finebyme/ . |
