Campus Bench Dedication

Michigan Tech will host a dedication ceremony later this week for a named bench on campus in memory of student Charlotte Cameron Jenkins. The dedication for the bench, which is located near the Husky statue, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday (April 3).

Jenkins died in a car accident on Jan. 16 while returning to campus after the semester break. Her family suggested memorial gifts be made to Michigan Tech and has chosen to use those gifts to name the bench as a lasting tribute to her memory.

All members of the Michigan Tech community are invited to attend the ceremony. Attendees will be required to observe social distancing guidelines and wear a mask.

Michigan Tech Biomedical Engineering Program Ranked Tops in the Nation

Study.com has published its 2021 rankings, and Michigan Tech is ranked #1 in the nation on the list of the Best Biomedical Engineering Degree Programs.

To compile its list, Study.com considered hundreds of universities across the country and based its decision on academic and career resources, the quality of education, faculty, and more.

MTU was the only college in Michigan to appear on the list of the top 44 programs.

Mr. Lid Is Here!

Dining Services is partnering with The Consumer Product and Manufacturing enterprise to implement a returnable container program. CPM is working with the reusable container brand Mr. Lid to attain a more sustainable campus.

Together we are implementing the use of these containers in the Memorial Union Building to reduce the amount of single-use plastics being thrown away.

How the program works is you initially buy into the program for 5$ and receive a key chain that acts as a token. You can exchange this token in order to have your food served in a reusable Mr. Lid container and receive a 10% discount on your order. You can then bring the Mr. Lid container back in order to receive your keychain and repeat the process.

This system is currently only going to be available in the MUB. However, the team does hope to expand the program in the future to other locations on campus.

The program has officially launched and there are still 32 keychains available for those interested in the program. You are able to buy into the program at the cash register of the North Coast Grill and Deli.

Lihua Ye will present "How Do Bacteria Regulate 'Gut Tasting?'" Ye is a Research Associate Senior in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Duke University -School of Medicine, Durham, North Carolina.”

Abstract: One universal behavior that crosses the whole animal kingdom is eating behavior. We can enjoy food through the sense of smell or taste. It is however not clear how the gut senses and transmits the food information. Ye's research has focused on a group of specialized chemosensory cells in the intestine epithelium, the enteroendocrine cells (EECs). EECs are hormone-secreting cells that are dispersed along the entire gastrointestinal tract.

Using a new zebrafish model system, Ye was able to investigate the EECs sensory function in vivo. I discovered that the EECs’ sensory ability is dynamically regulated by both diet and gut microbiota. Feeding zebrafish with a high-fat diet induces EEC into a nutrient insensitive state, which we named as “EEC silencing”. In addition to modulating EECs’ nutrient sensitivity, Ye's research also revealed that gut microbes could transform tryptophan, an essential amino acid that is contained in dietary protein, into new metabolites that can be sensed by a group of specialized EECs.

The EECs can then transmit such microbial information to the enteric and central nervous systems to modulate both intestinal motility and brain function. Understanding how animals sense and communicate the complex nutritional and microbial information would lead to the development of targeted new therapeutic strategies for many metabolic and neurological disorders.

4-Week Intermittent Fasting Research Study

A research study being conducted in the Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology is currently recruiting healthy individuals that are 18 to 40 years old. This study is looking into the effects of fasting on the cardiovascular system.

Participants will be asked to visit the lab three times over four weeks (3.5-hour total time commitment), and will be asked to complete two 24-hour water-only fasts during each of the four weeks.

Additionally, participants will be compensated and provided information about their body composition and cardiovascular health. If you are interested in learning more about this research study and to see if you are eligible to participate, then please either contact Steven Stelly or provide your information for us to contact you at the following link.
