English Language Institute
This program offers English as a Second Language (ESL) courses for international students who are not yet proficient enough in English to pursue academic study at the university level. Those students without an English language proficiency test score to report may be accepted to the University conditionally, with the understanding that they enroll in ESL courses before pursuing academic study. Upon arrival, students are tested and placed in appropriate courses at the appropriate levels. Courses include reading/vocabulary, writing/grammar, and listening/speaking. Levels include beginning, intermediate, advanced, and academic-support. Students usually complete a level in one fifteen-week semester. As their language proficiency increases, students make a gradual transition to academic study by taking some academic courses along with ESL. Full semester ESL courses are offered in the fall and spring semesters.
During summer, Track B, SMILE, an intensive seven-week ESL program, is offered at all levels. Students classified as intermediate and advanced may enroll in the SMILE Program in preparation for academic study during the fall semester.
