Week-by-Week Academic Schedule

Before Each Semester Begins
  1. Notify the Office of Student Records and Registration if you have a name change.
  2. Update mailing (local) and emergency addresses via Banweb (Student Information System).
  3. If applicable, contact these offices for help or information regarding the following:
    • Reinstatement—Student Affairs Office
    • Readmission—Office of Student Records and Registration
    • Transfer credit, new students—Admissions Office
    • Transfer credit, returning students—Office of Student Records and Registration
    • Vehicle registration and parking
      • Students living on campus—Residence Hall Management Assistant or on the Web: www.housing.mtu.edu/parking.htm
      • Students living off campus—Office of Student Records and Registration or on the Web: www.admin.mtu.edu/em, using the Vehicle and Parking link on the left-hand side of the page.
    • Weapon registration—Public Safety Department
    • Loans, scholarships, or work-study—Financial Aid Office
    • Process your billing statement by the due date. Students whose bills have not been processed by the due date will be charged a $50 late fee. You must process your billing statement even if you have a zero or credit balance.
Week 1
  1. The semester officially begins.
  2. Thursday is the last day to drop Part of Term A (first half of the semester) courses with a refund.
  3. Friday is the last day to add full semester courses without instructor approval.
  4. Students withdrawing from the University or dropping all of their classes by Wednesday are entitled to a 100-percent refund of tuition and fees.
  5. Students withdrawing on Thursday or Friday are entitled to a 90-percent refund of tuition and fees.
  6. If you have not already done so, process your billing statement by 5:00 pm on Wednesday. Classes will be dropped for all students whose bills have not been processed by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, and a Late Enrollment Fee of $100 will be charged. You must process your billing statement even if you have a zero or credit balance.
Week 2
  1. Courses added this week require instructor approval.
  2. Wednesday at 5:00 pm:
    • last day to drop full semester courses with a refund
    • last day to change majors to be effective for the current semester
    • last day to add full semester courses or change sections (instructor approval required)
    • enrollment status for financial aid is established
  3. Students withdrawing from the University or dropping all their classes are entitled to an 80-percent refund of tuition and fees.
Week 3
  1. Friday is the last day to drop a full semester course without it appearing on your academic record.
  2. Students withdrawing from the University or dropping all their classes are entitled to a 70-percent refund of tuition and fees.
Week 4
  1. Students withdrawing from the University or dropping all their classes are entitled to a 60-percent refund of tuition and fees.
  2. Starting this week, courses dropped will appear on your academic record with a W grade. Students may drop courses through Week 8 without obtaining special permission from the Office of Student Affairs.
Week 5
  1. Students withdrawing from the University or dropping all their classes are entitled to a 50-percent refund of tuition and fees.
Week 6
  1. Students withdrawing from the University or dropping all their classes are entitled to a 40-percent refund of tuition and fees.
Week 8
  1. Part of Term B (second half of the semester) classes start.
  2. Thursday is the last day to drop part of Term B courses with a refund.
  3. Friday is the last day to drop a full semester course without special permission from the Office of Student Affairs. A grade of W appears on your academic record.
Week 9
  1. Special late drops are approved by the Office of Student Affairs only when the student has extenuating circumstances. Courses approved for late drops appear with a grade of W on your academic record.
  2. Students withdrawing from the University after the eighth week receive an N or F grade. The Office of Student Records and Registration notifies the instructor of the withdrawal. An N is appropriate if the student is passing at the time of withdrawal; an F is given if the student is failing.
Weeks 9-12
  1. Registration for the following semester takes place. For more information on registration, go to www.admin.mtu.edu/em and click the Schedule Planning Center link on the left-hand side of the page.
Weeks 15
  1. Final Exam week
After the Semester Ends
  1. The Dean of Students acts on academic probation, suspensions, and dismissals.
  2. Grades are available on Banweb (Student Information System) after 5:00 pm Tuesday following Final Exam week.
