The Huskies have built a tradition of excellence in the University's varsity athletic programs. All sports, with the exception of hockey and Nordic skiing, compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, considered one of the top Division II leagues in the nation. Michigan Tech has a great tradition in its lone Division I sport, men's ice hockey, with three national titles to its credit. Michigan Tech has produced numerous All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, Olympians, and professional athletes throughout its thirteen varsity programs. Men's teams include basketball, cross-country, football, hockey, Nordic skiing, tennis, and track and field. Women's teams include basketball, cross-country, Nordic skiing, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Visit the website for details, including schedules.

The Student Development Complex (SDC) opened on September 2, 1980, and is one of the finest athletic recreational facilities in the country. The 235,000-square-foot complex features an ice arena, multipurpose room, pool, gymnasium, fitness center, racquetball/squash courts, and dance room.

The SDC offers students, faculty, and the community an opportunity to participate in a variety of indoor recreational activities.

Spacious men's and women's locker rooms feature saunas and showers. Conveniently located next to the locker room is an equipment issue area where basketballs, volleyballs, racquetball racquets, and other sporting equipment can be checked out. Towel service is provided for a nominal fee.

The SDC includes the following athletic facilities:

  • Fitness Center—The newly remodeled center, located on the second floor of the SDC, has five TV's, air-conditioning, new carpet and rubber matting, and new Hammer Strength machines and free weights. The full range of equipment includes treadmills, free runners, stair climbers, and upright stationary bikes.
  • Pool—The eight-lane, twenty-five-yard swimming pool is designed for recreational swimming and instruction. A separate diving well has two one-meter boards and a five-meter platform.
  • Six courts—These are available for squash, racquetball, and walleyball. To make reservations, call 487-2761.
  • Multipurpose room—The newly renovated multipurpose room (summer of 2006) has four hardwood floor basketball courts-two NCAA regulation ninety-four-foot courts in the middle and one eighty-four-foot court at each end. A new synthetic flooring covers a regulation, five-lane, 200-meter track that surrounds the basketball courts. Volleyball courts, badminton courts, a pole-vault pit, and a rock-climbing wall are also included. There are divider curtains that separate each of the four basketball courts and make five more-versatile spaces for student organizations to use.
  • Saunas—These are located in spacious men's and women's locker rooms.
  • Rifle range—The range, located in the basement of the SDC, accommodates the following MTU student organizations—Competition Rifle Team, Pistol Club, Practical Pistol Club, and the Archery Club—with weekly hours for their members.
  • Ice arena/Ice rental—Student groups can rent ice time. Check the schedule in the manager's office for available times. Groups must sign a liability release sheet before being allowed on the ice.
  • Athletic equipment rental—Students can obtain equipment for basketball, volleyball, badminton, soccer, wallyball, and cross-country skiing in the SDC. Users are responsible for the cost of replacing lost or damaged equipment. Rental payments (if applicable) must be made at the Central Ticket Office in the SDC before you can pick up certain items.
