April 2, 2009--Pride Week 2009 is coming to the Michigan Technological University campus Sunday, April 5, through Friday, April 10.

Following is a list of events. For more information, contact Keweenaw Pride at pride@mtu.edu, or view the website, www.keweenawpride.org .

* 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., Sunday, April 5, free film, "Milk"--Fisher 135. The Oscar-winning movie is about California's first openly gay elected official. The film covers the last years of Harvey Milk's life and career.

* 7 p.m., Monday, April 6, panel discussion, "GLBTA Civil Rights as an Ally"--Fisher 138. Students and staff will discuss how everyone can help the GLBT community in the fight for civil rights.

* 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 7, speaker, John Corvino--Rosza Center. Since 1992, John Corvino has been demolishing myths about homosexuality and morality. A philosophy professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, he is also known as "the gay moralist." He invites the campus community to join him in a dialogue on homosexuality, morality and diversity. This presentation is free.

* 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, "Guess the Straight Person"—Wadsworth Hall Annex. A panel of students will dissect the myths and stereotypes that surround sexuality.

* 8 p.m., Thursday, April 9, "Meet the Queens"—Douglass Houghton Hall Campus Study Lounge. Miss Joey Black and Cass Marie Domino will share what it means to be a drag queen.

* 8 p.m., Friday, April 10, "Drag Show"--Memorial Union Ballroom. Miss Joey Black and three other queens, including the world-renowned Cher impersonator Miss Candi Stratton, will perform at the 10th annual Drag Show. Drag shows feature queens (men) and kings (women) who dress up in costumes of the opposite sex and perform (lip sync) songs from famous artists. This is tongue-in-cheek entertainment, where gender boundaries are annihilated.

The Drag Show also includes an amateur competition, where Tech students will compete in drag for prizes. Prize packages are donated by local businesses and are awarded by a panel of student judges. Students should register ahead of time to compete: Email pride@mtu.edu . Time and slots are limited.
