March 31, 2009--Michigan Technological University's science and engineering research expenditures increased more than 28 percent during fiscal year 2007, according to figures just released by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Michigan Tech's overall ranking in research expenditures rose to 66th in the nation among universities without medical schools. The University ranked 117th among public universities and 163rd of 662 institutions nationally.

Michigan Tech's NSF research expenditure rankings increased in almost every science and engineering discipline, with electrical and computer engineering and environmental science making the greatest strides. Environmental science research expenditures increased from 73rd to 59th in the nation, and electrical and computer engineering research expenditures rose from 87th to 66th.

Michigan Tech's mechanical engineering ranked 22nd in the nation in 2007, with more than $11.5 million in research funding. Mathematical sciences remained the only College of Sciences and Arts science discipline in the top 100, ranking 75th in the country with more than $1.7 million in research.

"These figures are extremely encouraging," said David Reed, vice president for research. "They reflect real progress toward our goal of becoming a premier technological research university."

Michigan Tech's overall research expenditures have more than doubled, from $27.2 million in 2000 to $55.3 in 2007. Research dollars more than quadrupled in electrical and computer engineering, from $1.3 to $5.7 million, and quadrupled in environmental science, from $3.1 million in 2000 to $12.4 in 2007. Biomedical engineering saw nearly a three-old increase.

For the first time this year, NSF also issued detailed funding rankings for non-science and engineering fields. Two of Michigan Tech's non-science disciplines ranked in the top 100: visual and performing arts (72nd) and humanities (78th). Overall, Michigan Tech ranked 222nd out of 474 institutions in non-science and engineering research expenditures.

"We are very proud of humanities and of visual and performing arts," said Reed. "This level of funding is significant for arts and humanities programs at a university with a technological focus."

Michigan Technological University is a leading public research university, conducting research, developing new technologies and preparing students to create the future for a prosperous and sustainable world. Michigan Tech offers more than 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in engineering, forestry and environmental sciences, computing, technology, business and economics, natural and physical sciences, arts, humanities and social sciences.
