A fraternity house garage was severely damaged in an early morning fire today (Wednesday, Feb. 26).
After receiving a 4:40 a.m. call, the Houghton Fire Department arrived at the Beta Sigma Theta house at 1210 College Avenue in about eight minutes. Four trucks and 18 firefighters battled the blaze until the scene was cleared at 8:09 a.m.
According to fire officials, the upper floor of the garage, an old stable, is a total loss. The state fire marshal was expected to arrive this morning to investigate possible causes of the fire.
While the main house, a large, white building with red trim, was not damaged in the fire, it was evacuated. The Salvation Army provided assistance to the fraternity brothers. |
