A chilly send-up on the fairy tale “Pinocchio” took top honors among fraternities today (Thursday, Feb. 13) in Winter Carnival’s month-long statue competition at Michigan Technological University.
“From a Wooden Toy to an Icy Boy” was constructed by Sigma Pi with the help of members of the community group Tau Kappa Epsilon. The statue is located in front of Douglass Houghton Hall.
The second place finisher was Phi Kappa Tau, of 1209 W. Quincy St., in Hancock, for their display “Alice’s Dreams Unfold in a Wonderland of Cold.” Taking third is Sigma Phi Epsilon, which constructed “Jack Fights to Survive as the Tale Comes Alive” near the J. R. Van Pelt Library.
Among the sororities, Alpha Sigma Tau was the winner for “Winter Gleams as Beauty Dreams,” located at their house at 916 College Ave., in Houghton. Alpha Gamma Delta took second for “Through the Wolf’s Icy Gales, the Pigs’ Icy House Prevails,” built between Fisher Hall and the library.
Finishing third was Delta Zeta, for “The Maiden Fair Lets Down Her Hair,” on the north side of the Memorial Union.
This year’s theme is “Fairy Tales in Northern Gales.” You can see the Winter Carnival results and access images of the statues at http://www.admin.mtu.edu/carnival/results.html
