SEPT. 22, 2008--A one-car accident early Sunday morning has claimed the life of a Michigan Tech student.
The vehicle, carrying four passengers and the driver, was traveling on Pike River Road in Chassell Township. Shortly before 3 a.m. the driver lost control, and the car left the roadway, hit a tree and rolled over several times. Lee Drelles, 19, of Ludington, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The other passengers--Krista Kasuboski, Brett Jenkins and Jared Bussey--were taken to Portage Health, where they were treated for a variety of injuries, none of them life threatening. The driver was also treated and later jailed and scheduled for arraignment today, Sept. 22, in Houghton District Court.
"Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this tragedy—the students in the accident, their families and friends, and especially to Lee's family for their terrible, heartrending loss," said Les Cook, vice president for student affairs.
