JULY 28, 2006--Former Michigan Technological University president Ray Smith, who led Michigan Tech's exponential growth through the 1960s and '70s, will be named an honorary alumnus of the university at Alumni Reunion, set for Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 3-5.
Smith will be recognized at the Alumni Reunion Dinner, which will be held in the Memorial Union Ballroom on Friday, Aug. 4, beginning with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Other honorees will be Kevin North, class of 1994 and class of 1997, receiving the Outstanding Young Alumni Award; MTU Board of Control Member Mike Henricksen, class of 1964, and Dean Woodbeck, class of 1978, each receiving an Outstanding Service Award; and John Benaglio, class of 1970, and William Jackson, class of 1958, accepting Distinguished Alumni Awards.
Tickets for the dinner, which includes a prime rib and lake trout buffet, are $30 and are available in advance through Alumni Relations, 487-2400. No tickets will be sold at the door.
Reunion kicks off Thursday, Aug. 3, and will be headquartered in the welcome tent outside the Memorial Union, with registration for ticketed events inside the union. Starting Monday, the Alumni Relations office moves to reunion headquarters; you can reach them at the site or by phone, 487-2400.
The annual Pasty Picnic begins Thursday at 4 p.m. Weather permitting, it will be held outside the Walker Arts and Humanities Center. The rain site is the Memorial Union. Signs will be up designating class years, so this is a great time to get together and visit with alumni and share stories. Tickets are $13 and are available at the registration desk.
Also on Thursday, the Seaman Mineral Museum is open to visitors starting at 9 a.m., and a Rediscover Houghton walking tour begins at 6 p.m. A social for Keweenaw area alumni and friends will be held at the Downtowner Lounge, in Houghton, starting at 7 p.m.
Friday events begin with the All-Class Alumni Breakfast, at 8:30 a.m., including a presentation by President Glenn Mroz, "Michigan Tech's Future Outlook: The Strategic Plan and Where We Are Heading." Class year gatherings for 1966, 1976, 1986 and 1996 follow at 10 a.m., including the 1956 Golden M Pinning Ceremony.
The Campus Picnic starts at 11:30 a.m. outside the Memorial Union. The Chili Challenge, in which participants are invited to taste and judge recipes submitted by different departments, will be held 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Wadsworth Hall Cafeteria.
Campus open houses begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday and are being hosted by the Memorial Union, the Rozsa Center, the Mineral Museum, the SDC, the ATDC, the Opie Library, Rekhi Hall, Wadsworth Hall and the MTU Ski Trails.
On Saturday, the Big Tent Social, outside the Walker building, will be held from noon to 4 p.m., and everyone is invited. Food and beverages will be available.
The Alumni Volleyball Game, which brings together athletes from past teams, starts at 7 p.m. in the SDC, followed by a reception for the athletes, coaches, alumni and fans at 8:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom.
Reunion is capped off by a fireworks display, which begins at dusk, between 10 and 10:30 p.m., on the Houghton Waterfront.
