JULY 22, 2005 -- Michigan Tech football player Joe Berger has been recognized as the 2004-05 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, in voting conducted by the league's faculty athletic representatives.

Berger, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2005 National Football League Draft by the Carolina Panthers, became the first Husky to be taken in the NFL Draft since quarterback Dave Walter was picked in the 11th round by the New York Giants in 1987.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2003 and 2004, Berger anchored the Huskies' offense that ranked seventh among Division II teams in rushing offense (274.5 yards per game), 14th in total offense (446.2 yards per game) and 20th in scoring offense (36.0 points per game). He is a two-time All-GLIAC First Team selection and was one of only five offensive linemen in the nation to be named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America Team in his senior campaign.

Berger graduated from Michigan Tech last December with a 3.80 grade point average (4.0 scale) in mechanical engineering. A GLIAC All-Academic Team recipient in each of the past four seasons, Berger was also named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team twice in as many years. In addition, he was chosen as the 2004 National Football Foundation State of Michigan Student-Athlete of the Year.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is based on academic and athletic excellence. Berger will be entered in the NCAA Division II Scholar Awards regional ballot co-sponsored by Disney's World of Sports Complex (TM) and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association. To be nominated for consideration, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have demonstrated outstanding athletic talent.

Berger is the second MTU male student-athlete to receive the award in the past five years. In 2002, men's basketball standout Matt Cameron was honored with the same award.
