Scarlett Digs Salt Lake City For more information on this story contact:
JULY 22, 2005 -- Tim Scarlett, assistant professor of archeology at Michigan Tech, is looking for pottery left behind by pioneer craftsmen in Salt Lake City.
He's doing so by excavating a back yard.. The homeowner was planning an expansion, but wanted to be sure the work would not damage any relics.
Enter Scarlett, who has dug the equivalent to a backyard pool, unearthing remnants of a pottery shop that dates at least to the 1860s.
Stories about the excavation have appeared on KSL-TV in Salt Lake (http://tv.ksl.com/index.php?nid=5&sid=220474) and the Deseret News (http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,600150340,00.html).
In addition, Scarlett has created a web site and blog about the site and his experiences: (http://www.ss.mtu.edu/faculty/Scarlett/Research/UPP/upphome.htm)
