June 6, 2005--Janice Glime has been elected to a four-year term as president of the International Association of Bryologists.
The approximately 500 members of the IAB are experts in mosses and liverworts. Glime, a professor of biological sciences, assumes the presidency in July.
Glime has been an IAB member for more than 25 years and manages its listserve, Bryonet. She has been a council member of the IAB and of the American Bryological and Lichenological Association and the US treasurer for the Journal of the Hattori Botanical Lab.
Glime has been at MTU 32 years and teaches organismal biology, botany, plant taxonomy and bryology. She specializes in bryophyte ecology, including stream communities, adaptations, bryophytes in boreal and conifer forests, the role of Sphagnum in nitrogen cycling in regeneration jack pine forest, niche parameters in geothermal communities, and the niche characteristics of epiphytes.
The author of the book “The Elfin World of Mosses and Liverworts,” Glime is currently working on a book on bryophyte ecology.
