Sail Lake Superior; Receive Graduate Credit For more information on this story contact:
MAY 13, 2005 -- If all you wish for is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, now's your chance to make your sailor dreams come true.
The Denis Sullivan, a 137-foot, three-masted schooner based in Milwaukee, Wis., will be coming to Houghton in July, when 16 adventurous souls will come aboard and set sail for a week's journey on Lake Superior.
The seven-day trip is sponsored by Michigan Technological University, the Keweenaw Land Trust and Pier Wisconsin, operator of the Denis Sullivan.
Pier Wisconsin is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to foster understanding and appreciation of the freshwater world. The Keweenaw Land Trust is devoted to protecting the character of Keweenaw Peninsula lands for the public good.
During the Lake Superior Maritime Adventure, participants will act as the crew, learning how to sail a replica of one of the ships that plied Great Lakes waters until the advent of steam engines nearly furled their sails forever.
In addition, Michigan Tech faculty and the Pier Wisconsin crew will tell stories and give lectures and demonstrations on the Great Lakes' maritime heritage, water ecology, resource conservation and Lake Superior history. Three units of graduate credit from Michigan Tech, which provide continuing education credit for science and math teachers, are available for those completing the trip.
The Lake Superior Maritime Adventure begins Sunday, July 10, with orientation.
The itinerary depends on the weather and the judgment of the captain. Weather willing, however, participants will board the Denis Sullivan July 11 in Houghton. On the schedule are stops at Manitou Island and Copper Harbor, a visit to Superior Shoals and studies over some of the deepest waters in Lake Superior.
The Denis Sullivan is scheduled to return to Houghton July 16.
Cost for the entire trip is $1,400, including all lodging and meals. The 3 hours of graduate credit are available at an additional cost.
