MAY 5, 2005 -- The Michigan Tech board">Board of Control gave final approval to six new degree programs on April 29, including the first degrees to be offered by the Department of Fine Arts.
The four programs include BS degrees in Theatre and Entertainment Technology and in Audio Production and Technology; and BA degrees in Theatre and Entertainment Technology and in Sound Design.
The two other programs, BS degrees in Cheminformatics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, address growing specialties within the field of chemistry.
The board also gave preliminary approval to a new PhD in Biomedical Engineering and three spin-off programs from the School of Technology: BS degrees in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology.
In other business, the board
* approved a $2.5 million bond issue which will serve as matching funds for a $7.5 million state capital appropriation to be used for various repairs and improvements to the Michigan Tech campus. The projects should result in energy savings of $500,000 annually, about twice the expected payments on the bonds.
* heard from Chief Financial Officer Dan Greenlee that the university’s general fund is on track to end the fiscal year approximately $169,000 in the black.
* heard from President Glenn Mroz that he would be working with faculty and department chairs to develop a strategy to improve MTU’s status in the U.S. News and World Report college rankings. |
