April 28, 2005 -- Two teams in Michigan Tech's Applied Portfolio Management Program ranked among the top finishers in the Redefining Investment Strategy Education (RISE) Symposium held March 30–April 1 at the University of Dayton.

Team Gold placed second in the Undergraduate--Equity Blend category, with a 23.52 percent return during 2004 with a modest level of portfolio risk. Key stock selections for Team Gold included Bebe Stores and Department 56.

Team Black placed third in the Undergraduate--Equity Value category. They had a 14.46 percent return during 2004. Pharmaceutical Products Development Service and Marsh & McLennan Cos. were key contributors to their performance.

Each team managed their portion of the portfolio using their own investment strategy. Both teams faired well against the stock market as the S&P 500 earned 10.9 percent during 2004.

In addition to the competition, the students interacted with business and investment heavyweights, including Abby Joseph Cohen, chair of investment policy, Goldman Sachs; Robert Froehlich, vice chairman of Scudder Investment; Gary Gordan, chief investment strategist, USB Financial Services; and H. Lee Scott, president and CEO of Wal-Mart.

The teams’ advisor is Assistant Professor Dean Johnson (School of Business and Economics).
