A new company has spun-off from Michigan Technological University and has become a new tenant of the local SmartZone.
GS Engineering provides advanced engineering solutions to military and commercial customers, including computer-aided design, use of advanced materials, and modeling and simulation.
Glen Simula, formerly a research engineer at Michigan Tech's Keweenaw Research Center (KRC), is the company's founder and president. The other three employees are former KRC employees, Michigan Tech students, and local hires.
"We want to provide the community with solid, good-paying jobs in challenging positions, using top-quality Michigan Tech graduates," Simula said.
The company becomes one of the first in the Michigan Tech Enterprise SmartZone, a collaboration between the university and the cities of Hancock and Houghton. The SmartZone, which captures certain state taxes, has the goal of creating or attracting more than 500 science and engineering jobs to the area.
"GS Engineering is poised to grow," said Michigan Tech vice president for research, Dave Reed. "We are already developing cooperative projects. Their experience at KRC makes for a good fit for everyone."
The company is located on the second floor of the City Center in downtown Houghton. Their web address is www.gsengineering.com.
