Winter Carnival Features a Frozen Commotion For more information on this story contact:
Feb. 10, 2005--A tropical heat wave may have slowed construction, but Michigan Technological University students managed to sculpt another year’s worth of oo- and awe-inspiring snow statues for the university’s annual Winter Carnival celebration.
Fraternities, sororities and other student groups put in extra hours this week on their displays to make up for several days of temperatures that shot well above freezing. The campus is dotted with numerous icy works of art reflecting this year’s theme, “A Frozen Commotion from the Depths of the Ocean.”
An arctic rendition of Disney’s “Little Mermaid,” complete with King Neptune, won Phi Kappa Tau first place among fraternities in the month-long statue competition.
Second place among the fraternities was Tau Kappa Epsilon’s re-creation of Atlantis, “A City Once Lost Now Found in Frost.” Delta Sigma Phi took third with their imaginative “An Icy Blend of Sponge Bob and Friends.”
The top three sorority statue exhibits were carved by Alpha Sigma Tau, Delta Zeta and Alpha Gamma Delta.
