Jan. 25, 2005--With three weeks to go till Winter Carnival, statue-building at Michigan Technological University is in full swing.

The annual event, set for Feb. 9-13, gets hundreds of students out of the warmth and into the snow and cold of an Upper Peninsula winter. Snow statues are the undisputed highlight of the festival, featuring elaborate dioramas inspired by the carnival’s theme. This year, the builders take their inspiration from “A Frozen Commotion from the Depths of the Ocean.”

They will put the finishing touches on their statues the night of Wednesday, Feb. 9, as they work straight through until the judging the next morning.

During Winter Carnival, this small university town opens its arms to thousands of visitors, who wander throughout campus oo-ing and ahh-ing at the students’ handiwork. But carnival also features a queen contest, skits and ice bowling (in which students are both the bowlers and the bowling ball). In addition, there’s the ever-popular broomball, in which teams of students play a variant of hockey wearing shoes instead of skates and using brooms instead of sticks.

You can watch broomball in action and find out more about Winter Carnival at http://www.mtu.edu/carnival/ . To see last year’s statues, visit http://www.mtu.edu/carnival/2004/statues.html and click on “Photos from Feb. 4.”
