JANUARY 5, 2005 -- Michigan Tech's Kristina Owen took eighth place in the first race of the 2005 US National Cross Country Ski Championships.
Owen , a senior at Michigan Tech, covered the 15-kilometer freestyle course at Soldier Hollow, Utah, in 47:19, just two-and-a-half minutes back from winner Rebecca Dussault, who is vying for a spot on the US Olympic team.
The week-long championships include long and short freestyle races, a classic-style race, and sprints.
Tech assistant coach and graduate student Karl Walczak finished 28th in the men's 30-kilometer freestyle race. Senior Mikael Kilpela finished 45th.
The US Championships attracts the elite cross-country skiers from around the country, including those skiing for college teams, manufacturer-sponsored teams, and those skiing on the US Olympic Development team. A total of 69 men and 59 women finished the long freestyle race. |
