MAY 26, 2004 -- One of the top cross-country ski events in the country will come to the Michigan Tech ski trails in March 2006.

Michigan Tech and the Copper Country Ski Tigers have successfully bid for the 2006 junior national cross-country ski championships, also known as the Junior Olympics. The bid was awarded to the organizations last weekend by the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA),at a meeting in Salt Lake City.

The Junior Olympics brings together the nation's top youth skiers (ages 14-19) for competition in five different events. All told, more than 800 skiers, coaches, parents, fans and media will come to the area for eight days in early March 2006.

All of the ski events will take place on the Michigan Tech Trails. The university will also host a number of non-ski events throughout the week. The Copper Country Ski Tigers, an organization that promotes cross-country skiing among area youth, will marshal the army of volunteers needed to operate the Junior Olympics.

"You have a good volunteer group and your plans for the event are top-notch," said Luke Bodensteiner, Nordic director for USSA.

"This has been the goal of a dedicated group of volunteers for almost two years," said Mike Abbott, director of recreation for Michigan Tech's auxiliary operation and chief organizer of the JO bid. "This is a great opportunity to show off our trails, our area and the university to the best high school skiers in the country."

The event will be co-hosted by the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club and the Copper Island Cross-Country Ski Club.
