APRIL 16, 2004 -- Michigan Tech Interim President Glenn Mroz told an assembly of faculty and staff today that the university has reached its strategic goal of becoming a national university of choice.

For the past two years US News & World Report has ranked Michigan Tech among the top 50 public universities in the country. Earlier this month U.S. News ranked four Michigan Tech graduate engineering programs among the best in the country.

"These measures clearly indicate that Michigan Tech has arrived as a national university of choice." Noting the financial challenges the university has faced in recent years Mroz said, "our goal now is to stay there and build upon our excellent undergraduate and graduate programs and
research."

Mroz said that he has undertaken a major reorganization of the administrative operations of the university to facilitate achievement of Michigan Tech's strategic goals and to create a more efficient operation.

"Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Kent Wray has been instrumental in developing new programs and leading our academic units," Mroz said. "He will continue to oversee the colleges and schools, distance learning, international education, the Van Pelt library, the center for teaching, learning, and faculty development, and the special assistant to the Provost.

Services for students will be consolidated under the direction of Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Les Cook. His new responsibilities will include enrollment management, educational opportunity and student records
and registration.

Three departments that formerly reported to Fred Hensley, senior vice president for advancement and marketing, who resigned last week, will also be assigned to Cook. They are university relations, alumni relations and international advancement.

"Les now has responsibility for potential students, current students, assisting graduates find jobs and keeping contact and communicating with our alums and the many constituents of Michigan Tech," Mroz said.

Ellen Horsch, director of human resources, is the new vice president for administration. New areas reporting to her are facilities management, the Seaman Mineral Museum, information technology, the athletic department,
auxiliary services, as well as human resources. Cultural enrichment will report to auxiliary services and Marilyn Haapapuro was named director of human resources and will report to Horsch.

Chief financial office Dan Greenlee will have the controller, student business services, general and auxiliary funds, and residential services reporting directly to him. Greenlee and the Interim President will have joint supervision over the budget office. Changes in this area will create a sharper focus on University finances, Mroz said.

Research Accounting has been transferred to Vice President for Research David Reed. That change brings the research functions together in one area, which should prove a benefit to research faculty and staff, Mroz said.

The Vice President for Government Relations and Secretary to the Board of Control, Dale Tahtinen was given the additional responsibility for the institutional analysis office since so much of the work of that group involves compiling data for government, Mroz said.

Mroz told faculty and staff that the University has only one way to go and that is forward. "Despite the budget restraints, I am counting on all of you to continue the advancement in quality that has long been the hallmark of Michigan Tech faculty and staff."
