Parade of Nations Features Calypso Tumblers

Hundreds of representatives from more than 70 countries will march through the streets of Hancock and Houghton on Saturday, Sept. 21, in the 2002 Parade of Nations.
This parade, whose theme is "Carnivals of Nations," begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Hancock Middle School, crosses the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, and ends at Dee Stadium in Houghton.
In addition to festive floats and bands, this year's parade features a mask contest and a special guest performance by the Calypso Tumblers, from New York.
The Calypso Tumblers' breathtaking stunts have dazzled millions of New York City tourists at regular performances in Battery Park and Washington Square. While based in New York, this team of accomplished acrobatic gymnast, contortionist and comedic entertainers has performed throughout the United States and abroad. Founded in 1981 by M.C. John "Dr. Juice" Allicock, the team adopted their name and style from the popular, energetic music of their Caribbean homeland.
They've received national and international attention from television and print media, including New York talk shows where they were overwhelming crowd favorites in talent events. Television appearances include The Arsenio Hall Show, Showtime at the Apollo, MTV's Oddville, Good Morning America, The Today Show and Good Day, New York.
The Multicultural Festival follows the parade in Dee Stadium. Students and community members offer delicacies from around the world, and a variety of groups provide entertainment. This year, youngsters can enjoy free pony rides outside the stadium.
Donations for Parade of Nations T-shirts will be accepted at the Dee on behalf of the Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity to help them rebuild following the fire that destroyed their Ruby Avenue home.
