FEBRUARY 5, 2003 -- Statue builders at Michigan Tech were asked to sculpt their favorite things at this year's Winter Carnival. The judges' favorite among the fraternity entries--traditionally the showiest--was a circus with all the trappings.

In addition to a big top complete with flags, Phi Kappa Tau's exhibit features acrobats, a circus train and an elephant frozen in mid-pose.

Inspired by this year's theme, "From Coast to Coast, What We Love the Most," second-place winner Delta Sigma Phi crafted a full-sized homestead, complete with a car in the garage. Finishing third was Sigma Phi Epsilon's travel-driven entry, with a riverboat and old-fashioned car gassing up at equally old-fashioned pumps.

The top three sorority statue exhibits were carved by Alpha Sigma Tau, Delta Zeta and Alpha Xi Zeta.

For the last month, students have been staying up late in bitter cold to craft the statues, which are the centerpiece for Michigan Tech's annual Winter Carnival. The competition culminated today, when groups worked through the night until early this morning to complete their entries in temperatures that tumbled below zero.

Winter Carnival is organized by Blue Key National Honor Fraternity, 906-487-2818. For more on Winter Carnival, including the queen competition, results, statue photos and Web cams of statue sites, visit http://www.mtu.edu/carnival/
