November 14, 2003 -- The teleconference "Forestry Cooperatives: What Today's Forestry Professionals Need to Know" will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Room B11 of Michigan Technological University's Electrical Energy Resources Center.
The teleconference allows area residents to join hundreds of forestry, natural resource and cooperative development professionals nationwide and learn about the re-emergence of forest cooperatives. Cooperatives can provide a range of services to members, including land stewardship education, development of woodland management plans, sustainable harvesting, processing, marketing and more.
The teleconference is open to natural resource, extension and cooperative development professionals, as well as anyone with an interest in forestry cooperatives.
By understanding how cooperatives work, professionals can help forest landowners take advantage of the opportunities cooperatives provide.
The program will be facilitated by Barbara Clark, chair of the Western U.P. Forest Improvement District (WUPFID) Board of Directors. Formed 20 years ago, the WUPFID is the oldest cooperative in the U.S. Headquartered in Hancock, it is as one of five cooperatives to be featured at the conference.
More information on the conference can be found at http://www.wisc.edu./uwcc/forestcoops/ or by calling 612-624-3788. Forestry professionals can receive 1.5 SAF continuing education credits by participating in this conference.
The teleconference is sponsored by the Local Forest Cooperatives Working Group, a joint venture of the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin and the USDA Forest Service with funding from the USDA CSREES.
Local sponsors are the Western U. P. Forest Improvement District and Michigan Tech. For more information, contact Clark at 482-8276.
