August 22, 2003 -- Three of Michigan's leading universities have been included in the top public national universities in US News' latest "Best Colleges" rankings.
The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan State University and Michigan Tech were ranked in the "Top 50 Public Universities--Doctoral" category, second only to California in the number of schools making the prestigious list.
"We're extremely pleased to be included among the best public universities in America," Michigan Tech President Curt Tompkins said. "It's gratifying to receive recognition at the national level. The fact that three Michigan schools made the Top 50 underscores both the quality of our university system and the high value placed on higher education by the people of the state."
Michigan Tech ranked 48th on the list, with the University of Michigan listed third and Michigan State ranking 32nd.
All three schools were also included among the 248 schools in US News' "National Universities--Doctoral" category, which lists those private and public universities with a wide range of undergraduate programs, as well as master's and doctoral degrees. U of M was ranked 25th; Michigan State, 73rd; and Michigan Tech, 99th. Harvard and Princeton tied for first.
US News ranked the top 123 schools in its "National Universities--Doctoral" category, listing others in tier 3 (127 through a tie at 186) and tier 4 (191-248) alphabetically. Michigan universities listed in tier 3 are Wayne State University and Western Michigan University. In tier 4 are Central Michigan University and Oakland University.
Institutions are scored on a variety of factors, including reputation, graduation rate, retention, student ACT and SAT test scores, class size, alumni giving and more.
