August 7, 2003 -- The Michigan Technological University Board of Control authorized soliciting bids for a $31.3 million renovation of a residence hall at their August 7 meeting.

The project involves Wadsworth Hall, the university's largest residence hall, and includes dismantling the inside of the building to install fire protection devices and replace all of the wiring and plumbing. The project will also add laundry rooms and community areas throughout the building, improve accessibility, and revamp the dining area.

Wadsworth Hall was originally built in 1955. Additions in 1961 and 1966 brought capacity to 1,160. The renovations will be completed in several phases so that no more than 200 beds are taken out of use at any given time.

Bill Blumhardt, director of facilities management, said the bids will be ready on September 25 and due back in mid-November. The project is scheduled to begin in mid-December, when the residence hall is empty. Contractors will install doors and walls to isolate a portion of the building for renovations to begin.

The renovation will be financed by bonds, to be paid back from room and board fees, and will be completed by the beginning of the 2005-2006 academic year.

The board also heard a report on the university's intellectual property program. Vice President for Research Dave Reed said the university has received $1.2 million in royalties over the past three years and has entered into 39 licensing agreements.

In addition, a group of faculty and staff presented an update on a proposed $2.5 million child care center to be funded through private donations.
