May 9, 2003 -- Michigan Technological University's Board of Control approved a 14-week semester, beginning with the 2004-05 academic year.

The proposal came from the University Senate, which overwhelmingly approved of the change from the current 15-week schedule. The senate is comprised of faculty and staff. One of its responsibilities is to recommend academic policy.

The board asked that the senate develop a calendar incorporating a full week of vacation at Thanksgiving. The plan had originally called for cutting part of Thanksgiving break, but students asked for the full week.

Senate President Robert Keen, an associate professor in biological sciences, said the senate should have no trouble adjusting the calendar proposal for the 2004-05 school year. Next year’s calendar has already been set.

Michigan Tech changed from a quarter system to a semester system during the 2000-2001 academic year. The new 14-week version will allow for a 14-week summer semester, as well as more time for faculty to spend on grant- and proposal-writing activities.
