"Superteachers"

Glenn Mroz, MTU PresidentThe October 2007 edition of Wired magazine featured an advertisement that stated:

Superteachers: inspiring the next generation of US innovators. Every engineer, scientist, and technically trained person in our nation can look back and identify a teacher who played a significant role in his or her decision to pursue a technical career. Do you remember yours?

The ad asked readers to share their experiences at www.wiredinsider.com/ngf, and it reminded me of Michigan Tech faculty and the stories in this edition of the Michigan Tech Magazine. Within these pages is proof that great teaching at Tech occurs in many different forms.

Senior faculty share their insights and shape the careers of tomorrow’s faculty leaders, a recent graduate helps women in Nepal work their land, scientists and students explore global climate issues on a glacier in Alaska, and students from many disciplines work with professors to create a device to save lives.

We also hear from alumni about legendary faculty and staff; you’ll recognize some names, I’m sure.

The phrase “teach and you change the world” is true, and we are fortunate at Michigan Tech to have so many professors who change the world both inside and outside of the classroom and laboratory.

We are actively hiring more excellent faculty during the inevitable “changing of the guard” and through special campus initiatives like a focus on sustainability. (The Nepal and Bering Glacier stories are also excellent examples of work in sustainability.) Regardless of their area of expertise, I know these new faculty will explore the boundaries of knowledge while they teach our students to create the future, just as Tech faculty always have.
