Michigan Tech Board Approves Tuition Hike within State Guidelines

HOUGHTON--The Michigan Technological University Board of Control approved undergraduate tuition and fee increases averaging 8.5 percent May 10, in keeping with guidelines established by Governor John Engler.

Annual tuition and fees for lower-division (freshman and sophomore) students who are Michigan residents will increase 10.14 percent, from $5,887 to $6,484, a jump of $597. Tuition and fees for resident upper-division undergraduates (juniors and seniors) will rise 6.97 percent, from $6,315 to $6,756, an increase of $441.

Michigan's public universities have agreed to cap their average tuition-and-fee hikes at 8.5 percent or $425, whichever is higher, in exchange for having no decrease in their appropriations from the state.

Graduate tuition and fees, which are not covered in the agreement with the state, will increase approximately 15 percent. Resident master's students will pay approximately $7,222 per year, up from $6,308 in 2001-02. Resident PhD students will pay about $7,182, up from $6,252 last year.

The Board of Control approved increases for room and board in University residence halls ranging from 4.2 percent to 5.1 percent. Rates vary from $5,042 to $6,171. For example, the cost of a double-occupancy, non-suite room increased $264, from $5,181 to $5,445, or 5.1 percent, which includes 19 meals per week.

Rental rates for University apartments nudged upward about 2 percent. Rent for a two-bedroom apartment increased $10, from $474 to $484.

The Board thanked Claude Verbal for his two year's service as its chair and elected David Brule to succeed him for the coming year. Board Member Rodger Kershner was elected vice chair.
