Farewell Recital to Honor Jon Poupore

The Department of Fine Arts at Michigan Tech will present "A Farewell Recital" honoring violinist/violist Jonathan Poupore on Sunday, June 16, at 3:00 p.m. in the Choir Room of the Rozsa Center (Room 120). The concert features Poupore and three area pianists, Neil Paynter of Hancock, Dr. Greg Sulik of Marquette, and Finlandia University's Melvin Kangas.

The four musicians will perform nine pieces including sonatas for viola and piano by Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms; a violin and piano sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven; Jean Sibelius' Valse Triste, Op. 44, and Danse Champêtre, Op. 106, no. 1; Cantabile by Niccolo Paganini; Pablo de Sarasate's Romanza Andaluzo, Op. 22; and A la Valse by Victor Herbert. A "Suite for Viola" by local composer Robin Oye of Allouez will receive its premiere.

Jon Poupore has served as interim concertmaster of the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra for the past two years. He was principal violist with the Marquette Symphony Orchestra, section violinist with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, and maintained a studio locally, teaching violin and viola. Mr. Poupore is relocating to Baltimore, Maryland, where he will continue to pursue his career as a free-lance musician.
