HOUGHTON--A team of students
from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School won the 13th annual Bio-Athlon, held
May 15 by the Department of Biological Sciences at Michigan Technological
University.
Hancock High School took second
place in the Bio-Athlon, while students from Westwood High School, in
Ishpeming, placed third. The winning team members each received a $200
savings bond, with the second- and third-place winners earning $100 and
$50 bonds, respectively.
The student teams undertook
four biology problems that involved dissecting a mink, collecting specimens
from stream and woodland habitats, identifying blood cells and using biotechnology
techniques. None of the students had formal training in biology beyond
the traditional high-school sophomore coursework.
All participants were given
a certificate of participation and a Bio-Athlon T-shirt.
Teams from 18 high schools
competed in the Bio-Athlon, and a workshop was held for their accompanying
biology teachers.
The Bio-Athlon is organized
every year by the Department of Biological Sciences to stimulate interest
in biology among area youth.
The top three participating
high schools and their teams members were Lake Linden-Hubbell High School,
Alex MacDonald, Mike Brush, Michele Dupuis, Matt Willmer and coach Bill
Jarvis; Hancock , Robin Vitton, Joe Vichich, Joe Limback, Nicole Yarroch
