Story The 12th Annual Parade of
Nations will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22. and will feature representatives
from over 71 countries dressed in ethnic attire.
"The event has grown to
massive proportions," say organizers. This year's parade will begin
at 11 a.m. at the Hancock Middle School and proceed across the Portage
Lift Bridge, through downtown Houghton and end at the Dee Stadium. The
public is invited into the Dee after the parade, where they can take a
vicarious voyage around the world through various types of ethnic food
and entertainment. The parade is sponsored by Michigan Technological University,
the cities of Hancock and Houghton, Wells Fargo and the downtown business
districts of Houghton and Hancock.
The Parade of Nations marks
the culmination of many other special events. The annual Walk and Gawk
will begin on Saturday, Sept. 15 in Chassell. This event is a walking
historical tour of familiar communities we are familiar that perhaps haven't
fully explored. Historical walking guide brochures will be provided for
all participants. The first 50 walkers will be given a Walk and Gawk T-shirt.
Garage sales are also encouraged in the Chassell area on that day. Participants
may sign up from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Chassell Heritage Center.
The Copper Country Intermediate
School District and the Parade of Nations Committee are also sponsoring
a writing contest for area students through their schools. In addition,
for selected middle and high school students, there will be science presentations
by NASA representative Jerry Dobek and "an ephemeral sculpture moving
slowly in a thousand intricate pieces" by world-renowned performer,
Sha Sha Higby.
