Three Michigan Tech students were arrested Nov. 14 on warrants issued by Houghton County Prosecutor Douglas Edwards, according to Jon Ahola, director of MTU Public Safety. John Luczak, Kevin Royston and Jeffrey McGarry, all 18, have been charged with delivery, sending or placing of a device that was constructed to represent an explosive, incendiary device or bomb with the intent to terrorize, frighten, intimidate, threaten, harass or annoy any other person. The maximum penalty on this felony charge is five years' imprisonment and a $3,000 fine. They are being charged in connection with an incident that occurred early on the morning of Nov. 9. A student notified Public Safety that a rag or small piece of wood was burning on the roof of Wadsworth Hall cafeteria. The Houghton Fire Department was notified and discovered a plastic bottle stuffed with paper on fire and quickly extinguished the flames. Little or no damage was done to the roof, and authorities determined there was no need to evacuate the residence hall. As of the afternoon of the 14th, all three suspects had been arraigned in 97th District Court and were lodged in the Houghton County Jail in lieu of 10 percent of $15,000 bond. Police are still investigating the possible involvement of a fourth person present at the time of the incident. ### 11/14/01 |
