HOUGHTON, MI--Gary F. Tucker,
president of Trees Inc. of Seeley Lake, Montana, will receive the Board
of Control Silver Medal during commencement ceremonies at Michigan Technological
University May 12.
The Silver Medal symbolizes
personal success--the significant accomplishments of Michigan Tech alumni
or friends who serve as leaders in their communities, state, or nation.
Tucker, a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, earned a bachelor's degree
in forestry from MTU in 1959, and has distinguished himself in the forest
resources field for more than 40 years.
He began his career in 1959
as District Forester for the State of Idaho, with responsibility for administering
timber management, grazing, and other land management activities on 250,000
acres in southern Idaho. He then spent two years as logging operations
manager for the Star Valley Lumber Company in Afton, Wyoming, before joining
Champion International Corporation for a seven year stint as resource
manager for the company's Rocky Mountain Division in Jackson Hole.
Tucker left Champion in 1973
to become vice president for resources with the Hoerner Waldorf Corporation
in Missoula, Montana. After four years with Hoerner, he accepted another
vice president for resources post, this time with Southwest Forest Industries,
headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. He left that position in 1984 for a
brief stint as director of forest resource operations with Plum Creek
Timber Company of Seattle, Washington. He was quickly promoted to vice
president for resources with the company, an office he held for five years.
From 1989 to 1995 he served a president of Trees Inc., with offices in
Seeley Lake, Montana and Cave Creek, Arizona.
He left Trees Inc. in 1996
to assume the post of president and CEO of Pope Resources/Olympic Resource
Management in Poulsbo, Washington, a ventures business that acquires,
owns, and manages land and its related resources for itslef and others.
He retired from Pope in 2000 and has since resumed the presidency of Trees
Inc., which continues to consult within and outside the forest products
community.
Tucker has been active on several
professional organizations, including service as president/chairman of
the Board of Directors of Pope Resources, member of the advisory and executive
committees of John Hancock Timber Resource Group of Boston; member, Board
of Governors and chairman, Public Timber Division, National Forest Products
Association; director of the Intermountain Forest Industry Association
of Coeur d" Alene, Idaho; and member of the Society of American Foresters.
He is an active Michigan Tech
alumnus and is a member of the School of Forestry and Wood Products Honor
Academy.
