Talks This Week on Pioneers, MTU History and Great Lakes Lighthouses

HOUGHTON--The public is invited to attend three talks being held during the 2001 Alumni Reunion at Michigan Technological University.

History professor Larry Lankton will give the talk "Ma and Pa Brockway: A Pioneer Family on the Lake Superior Frontier," on Thursday, August 2, at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Red Metal Room. Lankton will tell the tale of Daniel and Lucena Brockway, an American couple who uprooted themselves and moved to the far-distant Lake Superior wilderness in 1843.

Lankton is author of "Cradle to Grave: Life, Work and Death at the Lake Superior Copper Mines" and "Beyond the Boundaries: Life and the Landscape at the Lake Superior Copper Mines, 1840-1875." A book-signing will follow his presentation.

University Archivist Erik Nordberg will present "Growing a Campus--A Historical Review" on Friday, August 3, at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Red Metal Room. From the early classes held in rented space above the Houghton Fire Hall to the new Rozsa Center, Nordberg will lead guests on a visual journey through campus history. Taking advantage of historical photographs and maps, he will follow the growth of the campus since the University was founded in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School.

Also at 2 p.m. on Friday, 1971 alumnus Phil Block will give a multimedia presentation on remote Great Lakes lighthouses, "Lights on the Lakes," in Noblet G002, the forestry auditorium. His program shows lighthouses in all seasons and settings and is accompanied by music, images, and sound effects.
