HOUGHTON--A $33, 000 grant from the Whirlpool Foundation allowed more
than 40 Benton Harbor junior and senior high school students to attend
the 2000 Minority College Access Program (MCAP) and Summer
Youth Program (SYP) at Michigan Technological University this year.
The Whirlpool Foundation, in partnership with Michigan Tech, provides
this opportunity to help participating students increase their academic
skills, career awareness, and familiarity with four-year degree programs.
Students enroll in a variety of explorations ranging from chemistry to
computer programming to mechanical engineering. Teachers accompany the
students to learn more about MTUs undergraduate programs, financial aid,
and admissions procedures.
Six students returned this fall to meet with department advisors; talk
with admissions, financial aid, and career center staff; interact with
current MTU students; and learn more about what Michigan Tech has to offer.
A newsletter will be sent to all MCAP participants; it is designed to
keep them connected to MTU's campus.

University partnership, contact Chris Anderson at (906) 487-3539.
