ANN ARBOR STUDENT WINS TUITION AWARD

SchauweckerHOUGHTON--Christoph Schauwecker of Ann Arbor is the Grand Prize winner of this year's Natural Resource Student of the Year essay competition conducted by Michigan Technological University's School of Forestry and Wood Products.

His winning essay was titled, "The Temperate Rain Forest of North America." As Grand Prize winner, he will receive $1,000 in tuition per year for four years in Michigan Tech's wood science program.

Schauwecker, the son of Friedrich and Ulrike Schauwecker, is a senior at Lutheran Westland High School, where he has participated in varsity cross country and has been a member of the school yearbook staff for two years.

The MTU School of Forestry and Wood Products annually conducts the Natural Resource Student of the Year competition for high school juniors and seniors. Each contestant must submit an original 400-700 word essay showing how a specific natural resource or ecological component such as soil, water, air, or wildlife functions and how it influences the natural environment.
