NEW ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND ESTABLISHED

HOUGHTON--Julian Ronse of Brevard, North Carolina has pledged $1.1 million to Michigan Tech's Leaders for Innovation Campaign to establish the  Rogers-Ronse Endowed Scholarship.

The scholarship will recognize undergraduates who demonstrate above average capabilities and who have the need for financial assistance. The amount of the scholarships will equal the annual cost of in-state tuition and fees, the average cost for room and board in a residence hall, books, plus $600 for miscellaneous expenses.

Recipients will be freshmen who were in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class and who are enrolled in a baccalaureate curriculum. The scholarships are renewable on an annual basis for students who maintain a grade point average of 3.25.

Ronse received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Michigan Tech in 1947 and spent his professional career with Michigan Bell Telephone, from which he retired as a district engineering manager. He is a member of the MTU Alumni Association, the Golden M Club, McNair Society, and the Hubbell Society. His wife, the former Helen Rogers, died in 1999. She was a native of Hancock, MI and graduated from Northern Michigan University with a teaching degree in English and history. She worked for J.L. Hudson department stores as director of corporate development and employment.

"Michigan Tech brought Helen and me together when we were students," said Ronse. "We have benefited greatly during our lives from our association with Michigan Tech and we want to help others have an opportunity to obtain a Michigan Tech education."

The Leaders for Innovation capital campaign aims to raise $140 million for Michigan Tech by 2003.
