HOUGHTON, MI-- Michigan Tech plans to offer two new doctoral programs
following Board of Control action on December 15: a PhD in Computer Science
and a PhD in Forest Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology.
Nationally, the unemployment rate for computer science PhDs is about
1 percent. A PhD program will enhance research in the Department of Computer
Science while satisfying a national need for highly trained individuals.
The PhD in Forest and Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology will be a
research degree, in which candidates demonstrate advanced ability in course
work and innovative research work related to molecular biology of a forest
species and/or application of that knowledge to the development of industrial
products and processes.
Both degree programs are subject to review by the State Board of Academic
Officers and another vote of the Board of Control, tentatively in March.
