Story HOUGHTON--James Mack, president and chief executive officer of Cambrex
Corporation in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will speak at Michigan Technological
University's Winter Commencement Saturday, Dec. 16. Approximately 330
students will be receiving degrees during the ceremony.
He will also receive an honorary doctorate in chemical engineering in
recognition of his success via education, endeavor, hard work, and leadership.
Mack received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from
Michigan Tech in 1959. He went on to earn a master's degree in business
administration from Western New England College in 1961 and did graduate
work at the University of Toledo.
Cambrex is a world-wide leader in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and
therapeutics. Mack became the corporation's president in 1990, its chief
executive officer in 1994.
Under his leadership, Cambrex has purchased four other major businesses
and has seen its annual sales rise from $130 million to $500 million.
The company deals with chemicals, molecular biology, chemical synthesis,human
cells, polymer systems, medical devices, and cell culture.
Mack is a member of several professional associations, including the
American Institute of Chemical Engineers, The Chemical Engineering Academy,
and the American Chemistry Council.
In 1999, he received an award for executive excellence from the Chemical
Management and Resources Association.
Besides his professional accomplishments, Mack has been actively involved
with Michigan Tech. He is an MTU life trustee, a life member of the Alumni
Association, and a member of the National Advisory Board, the President's
Society, and the National Campaign Committee.
Mack is a native of Mackinaw City, Michigan.
