Houghton--Michigan Technological University has revitalized its successful summer college preparatory program, MaCH-I, a summer bridge program with a course work option or a choice of two different one-week workshops. Both the course work option and the workshops offer students an opportunity to brush up on skills critical to success in college classes. The Pre-calculus Workshop (June 18-24 or July 30-August 5) is designed to help students boost forgotten skills with a rigorous review of Algebra and Trigonometry. The Mathematical Technology Workshop (July 23-29) will give students experience with the mathematical software Mathematica as well as experience using their calculator effectively (but not as a crutch). Students will experience team learning exercises and small classes with increased student/instructor interaction in all workshop settings.
The coursework option, a six-week program with courses in mathematics, English, Chemistry and Physical Education will be offered this summer July 11 through August 18. Students involved in this option will experience college life in a less pressured environment while developing their math background. Students will also develop a sense of college learning expectations and increased confidence in their abilities. In addition to class work students have the option of participating in recreational activities such as movie nights, hikes, and picnics, and additional afternoon/evening study sessions and team learning exercises. New this year is a series of colloquia designed to orient students to university life, including a presentation on the new Enterprise Program, services at the university Career Center, and time management and organizational skills.
"Our goal is to provide students with the essential ingredients for a successful career at Michigan Tech," says program director Peg Balachowski. "Developing good study habits will increase the probability of their success. "
