The development of Hecla Location in Calumet Township will be the topic of the next Archival Speakers Series presentation, set for Thursday, August 10, at 4:00 p.m. in the Archives Reading Room, on the third floor of the J. R. Van Pelt Library.

Donna Zimmerman, a graduate student in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will report on her research into the history of Hecla Location, a small area of worker housing developed by the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company between its mine and the village of Laurium. The presentation is being given as part of Zimmerman's summer research visit to the Michigan Tech Archives, a trip supported by a travel award from the Friends of the Van Pelt Library.

She is investigating the history of company-sponsored community planning and examines company housing as a means of social control over company workers. Zimmerman will accompany her talk with slides and will consider changes made to the location in recent years and their impact on the contemporary cultural landscape.

The Archival Speakers Series highlights current research using the Archives' collections. The presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Van Pelt Library.
